All the information that you experience or learn is recalled by the mental activity known as memory. Our memory can be of two types namely
- Short term memory: That would be categorized as our memory’s capacity to store information for a short span of time.
- Long term memory: That would be categorized as our memory’s capacity to store information for a long duration.
Memory retention takes place after going through some stages of formation.
- The first stage is known as “acquisition”. In this stage the “neurons” enter information into the brain, with the help of its pathways. Information is more appropriately encoded, when there is a presence of good concentration. So, if you are thinking how to improve memory power, remember that concentration is a must. If there is poor concentration, the information goes away.
- “Consolidation” being the second stage, helps to store new information, conditioned to the fact that there was good concentration in the first stage. - “Retrieval” is the third and the most interesting stage of memory retention. In this stage, the procedure in which the brain stored the information has to be activated again to recall the information.

Not only can this, but even eating healthy food enhance your memory power. Your brain should be fed with supplements such as Vitamin B6 and E, thiamine and an adequate amount of water. You must avoid eating 2-3 big meals and rather opt for 4-6 small meals. This is considered to be more nutritious.
You must learn to give your memory some time for it to store the information. Sometimes, you read something and get distracted in seconds. This would only weaken your memory retention capacity. So again, it’s obvious, concentration plays a role. If you want the information to be stored into the memory, you need to fixate your attention to the information you are reading about. Reduce the distractions and reduce the stress.
